HE
WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST CHROMATIC PLAYERS OF ALL
TIME
In a career that spanned nearly sixty years, Pete
Pedersen would compose, arrange, perform and conduct
his way into the hearts of music lovers everywhere.
His untimely death in 2002 was particularly felt
deep within the harmonica community.
He began his career as one of (and later, leader
of) Borrah Minevitch’s Harmonica
Rascals, went on to join the Don
Henry Trio ("Sabre Dance")
and the Harmonic-Aires, before
going solo in the mid 1950s. Over the years he
would perform at countless music festivals and
harmonica-related events around the world, and
write, arrange and/or record thousands of now-classic
jingles, songs and scores, two concertos for harmonica,
and nearly all of Jerry Murad’s Harmonicats’
arrangements, including the multi-million selling
hit, “Peg O’ My Heart.”
In 2007 a brass note in Pete's honor was placed
on The Beale Street Walk of Fame.
Located in Memphis, Tennessee, Beale Street is
the state’s #1 tourist attraction. Pete’s
note, at the corner of Second and Beale is right
in front of B.B. King’s Blues Club, where
it is flanked by Charlie Musselwhite’s note
on the left, and B.B. King’s note on the
right.
Talk about being in good company!
